Is the plastic water tank safe?
[ltr]Plastic water tank, plastic water bottles for the purpose of storing drinking water and plastic storage purifiers are not safe. See why…[/ltr]
[ltr]Bisphenol A, a controversial chemical commonly used in manufacturing bottles, food containers and most of the food and water contact containers from the last 50 years.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US FDA, in April 2008 expressed “concern" about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate glands in fetuses, infants, and young children. The health risks associated with BPA are Cancer, Heart Problems, Brain & Behavior Problems, Hormone disruptions and, many more health risks which are frightening.[/ltr]
[ltr]What is BPA?[/ltr]
[ltr]Bisphenol A, a controversial chemical commonly used in manufacturing bottles, food containers and most of the food contact containers from the last 50 years.[/ltr]
[ltr]Statistics Canada data released in August 2010 found about 91% Canadians have detectable levels of BPA in their bodies, with those between ages 12 and 19 most likely to have the chemical in them. The findings are consistent with results from international studies — BPA has been detected in 93% of Americans aged six or older and 99% of Germans aged three to 14.[/ltr]
[ltr]Health Canada had long held the chemical was not a risk to human health, but in October 2008 Canada became the first country in the world to ban the import and sale of polycarbonate products containing Bisphenol A.[/ltr]

[ltr]Plastic is a material that is, in general, looked down upon and we have heard ample of reasons for it. But over the years we have become so used to plastic that seldom do we realize, that it is actually affecting us adversely and in a lot of ways. So plastic water tanks are of course a big NO.
I am listing down a few facts that will help you understand better, what all plastic is doing to our bodies.
[/ltr]

  • Plastic reacts with heat and produces BPA- an organic synthetic compound which can lead to reproductive hormone disorder.
  • Phthalic acids commonly found in plastic causes allergies, asthma & pregnancy complications.
  • Petroleum chemical present in plastic results in adverse effects on nervous system and respiratory irritation.
  • Stored water becomes smelly in a plastic water tank.
  • Plastic tanks alter the taste of water.
  • Plastic supports the growth of algae, fungi, and bacteria ultimately becoming a cause of disease.
  • Water from plastic water tanks is not ideal for household chores like watering plant, washing clothes etc.
  • The water stored in plastic tanks causes hair fall and skin problems.
  • Plastic water tanks require time to time maintenance, thus an added expenditure.

[ltr]These are just a few demerits that plastic water tanks have. So if you are still using plastic tanks for storing water in your home. Switch to Stainless steel water tankstoday. And save yourself and your loved ones from deadly diseases. If you are looking for a manufacturer, consult Purever. You can call them here and get more information about their product.[/ltr]

[ltr]That depends on the quality of the products. Personally I choose the brands that use virgin plastic and are Approved by government departments. I always recommend using roto moulded tanks because they are suitable to be used under the sun. Other tanks made of HD and blow molded dont last much under it.[/ltr]
[ltr]I would recommend the 3 companies that are well know in Government departments, time tested and known for Expertise and quality.[/ltr]

[*]JS Polyplast - They are prominent in Governmental supply and are present throughout Northern India. They use Virgin food grade plastic and their tanks are quite heavy. What i like about them is the affordability and the variety that they offer.

[ltr]2. Sintex. - The name says it all. If you are willing to pay double the size for the same tank without any gaurantee than always go for Sintex. Their tanks are heavy and last long.[/ltr]

[ltr]Other Brands - You can go for supreme siltank too but as of now it has received ambivalent responses very average reviews. Still better than the rest though.[/ltr]
[ltr]Notet - Don't go for Blow moulded tanks by any company be it Sintex or Vectus or Plasto. They use HD grade plastic which doesn't last more than 2–3 years under the sun. Blow molded tanks have a low ESCR values which makes than unusable under the sun.[/ltr]

My 4600 litre water tank made of polyethylene is ‘safe’. It is ‘safe’ from transferring contaminants from its materials. However that does not mean it is safe for drinking. The water is rain water with whatever existed in the atmosphere, collected from a metal shop roof, collected in painted aluminum gutters, contains entrained atmospheric dirt, pollen, tree debris and whatever flies, crawls or wiggles through the system. Although filtered to under 0.3 mm and excellent for watering gardens, it would have to be boiled or otherwise disinfected before consuming.

[ltr]Nowadays, the plastic water tank is most popular for water storage as it is lightweight and leakproof. They are available in circular as well as cubical shape. The plastic water tank is made up of high-density polyethene. These tanks are leakproof, rustproof, maintenance free, durable and economical.[/ltr]

[ltr]The use of poor quality plastic may influence the chemical composition of water up to a large extent. It might even go unnoticed for a short period of time, but after some time, the taste of ‘plastic’ may come in stored water. Also, when there is excess sunlight reflection on the sides of the water tank, the light that comes through cause algae to grow. When algae grow in your plastic water storage tanks, you cannot use water from them[/ltr]

With the variety of rotomoulded polyethylene tanks available on the market it means that you can avoid corrosion and have a tank with a longer life. We look at 7 practical benefits of using plastic tanks over steel tanks.

1. Plastic tanks weigh less

Steel tanks weigh a lot more than plastic tanks and usually need the help of a crane to move them onto your property. In comparison, plastic tanks are lightweight and can be moved into position by hand, which is an advantage if there is hilly or rough terrain on your property.

2. Easier to position

The surface upon which steel tanks sit need significant preparation before the tank is installed. This can involve expensive steel rings and a concrete base to keep the bottom from rusting. Plastic tanks can sit on any flat surface as long as there’s nothing sharp underneath, some can also be positioned underground away from sight.

3. A wider variety

Steel tanks are circular with a coned roof. They may change in diameter but the basic shape is the same. Plastic tanks on the other hand, come in a wider variety of shapes and sizes. From rounded, to slimline, there is sure to be a plastic tank to suit your needs.

4. Blend better with the landscape

Plastic tanks come in a greater variety of colours than steel tanks. They can stand out or blend in with your home and landscape depending on the look you’re going for. They are suitable for both rural and urban use.

5. They won’t rust

As mentioned, the biggest advantage of plastic tanks over steel tanks is that they don’t rust over time and need to be replaced. Their longevity is also due to the fact that they are made to withstand the Australian climate. UV-inhibitors protect the tanks from degradation from sunlight.

6. Strong and durable

Steel tanks are hardy, but as their parts are welded or bolted together, side seams, joints and weld lines can become weakened over time. The rotomoulding process bonds plastic through speed and heat, with the use of a mould, so the final product is more durable and less likely to fall apart.

7. Better for drinking water

Steel tanks are galvanised with a zinc wall which, while not a health risk, can affect the taste of drinking water. Studies on some steel tanks have also shown a harmful level of lead. Many people are not comfortable in taking this risk with their drinking water. Plastic tanks are manufactured from food-grade safe, BPA-free polyethylene plastic so they’re 100% safe for storing drinking water.

Safe water free from any impurities is a basic requirement for the people. In today’s pollution prone environment, hygiene of water is a must. Particularly in developing countries, the shortage of pure drinking water is very common. We need water for almost 24 hours for our day to day needs. In most of the developing countries, the municipalities or local government does not supply water for 24 hours. Hence it is compulsory for a house owner to store the water for their day to day needs.

Nowadays, the plastic water tank is most popular for water storage as it is lightweight and leakproof. They are available in circular as well as cubical shape. The plastic water tank is made up of high-density polyethene. These tanks are leakproof, rustproof, maintenance free, durable and economical.

The water quality in your plastic water storage tanks is a huge concern. If the water is being supplied by the municipality, it is often safe to assume that the water quality is good. Therefore, if it is being treated or filtered before supplying, it is well and good. If it is not, for example in case of rainwater harvesting, very little can be done to purify it inside the tank.

The use of poor quality plastic may influence the chemical composition of water up to a large extent. It might even go unnoticed for a short period of time, but after some time, the taste of ‘plastic’ may come in stored water. Also, when there is excess sunlight reflection on the sides of the water tank, the light that comes through cause algae to grow. When algae grow in your plastic water storage tanks, you cannot use water from them. Therefore it is recommended to go for a water tank that has been made with food grade material (Food grade plastic has to meet certain standards of purity. It cannot contain dyes, other additives or recycled plastic products which are harmful to humans).

The plastic water tank is made up of food grade material only ensures the quality of water. But nowadays all manufacturers use food grade plastics. Also, the manufacturing process ensures a uniform cross section and even thickness of each layer. All these layers actually help to maintain water quality, clean, safe and healthy.

Hence, the answer is yes! You can use plastic water tank only if there is no algae growth and they are NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) approved. As water is the basic necessity of life, it has to be healthy and safe. So, before buying any water storage tank one should make the quality check to ensure his or her life and then family is in safe hands.
